Green Water ‘Ankerbrug’ Mechelen

Green Water – information and map of the inlet.

The Green Water or Groen Waterke is one of many idyllic spots to visit in Mechelen.  It is the remains of the Oude Melaan (Old Melaan) inlet.  Located within the area where two Abbeys – Sint Truiden and Refuge of Tongerlo. Jutting out of the building were brick ledges which were once used as toilets.

It is said that young people use to sail in boats along the Melaan, where upon they use to aim at the nuns bottoms and ultimately whatever they were aiming use to clog the pipes.  Alas, Mother Superior of the Convent took matters into her hands and complained to the Town Hall.  Fortunately for the Superior Mother her complaint was heard and less boats were allowed to use the Melaan.

Its beautiful green colour is due to Duckweed laying on the top of the water. Over the years the water has been tested
