I recently had the pleasure of spending the morning with one Christophe Harou from Generous. They were busy making the last preparations prior to heading off to an exhibition in Germany. He is one of the four proud owners of the Belgium Company that manufacture tasty (yes indeed for gluten free) bio gluten products. Their aim is break the stigma that unfortunately hangs around gluten (its tasteless and dry). Instead, their products aim to deliver rich in flavour, pleasant taste and texture and for people to easily digest.
The Company began when Christophe discovered he was allergic to gluten. Alas, his love of biscuits and pastries was on the cards of being bid farewell, yet not all was lost. Christophe and his wife Theodora found the quaint L’Arrière-Cuisine which was where they met Jean-Benoît and Aurélie Ghenne – two of the cooks who were producing excellent gluten free food. This love of bio and gluten-free was the connection for these two couples to begin creating a business together and this is how Generous began. Celebrating their 4th year (2017) in business, Generous shows that they are indeed doing something right!
In their artisan workshop in Brussels, they give life to the Generous family: irresistible cookies with well-defined flavours, bread mixes and also pre-made tart bases. Gourmet and tasty, the biscuits are bio, gluten-free and have an added Belgium touch which makes all the difference.
Transparency and traceability are guaranteed throughout the chain. The various types of flours are mainly from France, the Netherlands and Italy, but most of the ingredients are purchased locally or regionally. No refined sugar or wheat at Generous, but alternatives like tapioca flour, buckwheat flour or potato starch are used.
The delightful style and design are created in-house by Christoph`s partner. A local Graphic Designer from Antwerp creates the characters for all the products. Style and branding are key, where each product is brought to life. Their aim is to tell a story with the products which is why a specific character is linked.
The biscuits are made in Brussels within their own factory and are then transported close by where a Sheltered workshop package the biscuits. Goodness products are sold within Belgium and can be purchased from your local Bio Planet and other independent whole food shops. They are exporting to France, UK, Spain, Luxembourg, Portugal and Switzerland.
A double thumbs up for their biscuits, in particular Charlotte Chocolate and also Celine Citron. Keep an eye out for new products as there is a new Breakfast biscuit that is soon to be released.
