Unwined is perfectly located – within the heart of the City of Mechelen, overlooking the majestic St Rombouts Cathedral , the Post Office and the Grote Markt. This location has been home since August 2015. The building was traditionally a residential home and has been renovated in keeping some of the traditional features of the house. (Keep an eye out for the beautiful tiles on the floor near the wine cupboards).
Unwined is run by Koen and Miriam and both are WSET Level 3 student (Sommelier) trained. With a list of over 150 wines, (and they have a story to tell) the choice is diverse yet their menu is an ideal starting point. If you are stuck in knowing what to choose Miriam, Koen or their knowledgeable staff can be on hand to advise. Whether you are looking for a mellow traditional Red or wishing to explore the New World Wines then dip in and explore!
The inspiration of Unwined was led by Koen, he wanted to create a space where you could come and enjoy wines which paired well with quality tapas. One can easily loose an hour or two enjoying the company of friends or family or even a business lunch gathering. Not tailored to any specific age demographic, clientele are diverse – from young couples to older party groups. During Summer they open up their cosy terrace located at the back of this old house. If you don’t mind the odd car rumbling past then you could also grab their outdoor seating which is located in front. It is recommended to book ahead if you are a party of 4 or more or make sure you arrive early. Unwine does indeed fill up quickly!
In addition the wines, their tapas is not to be mocked either. Freshly cut in house, they work with local suppliers for cheese, a close friend bakes their delicious bread and they have 5-6 distributors they work with for their wines and meats. Desserts are also supplied from a local bakery.
Whilst their menu changes quite frequently, don’t expect to find your new found favourite on the list. Take note of the wines name or even purchase a bottle or two directly from Unwined.
