Who is Culture Boy?

It is amazing how you come across new businesses that have a story to share, not just about their product, though how it all began.  Attending the Stuffmarket at  T’Malines   was a quirky brand of clothing with snappy tag lines and cool designs.   Having liked their ethos of fairwear, an ethical or eco certification I made contact with Cultureboy.  There was an added bonus that they are a local business from Mechelen and a start-up fashion from Flanders.

I asked if they would mind answering a few questions and they took up the challenge – see below their answers…

Q. What inspired Cultureboy to be set up?

A. We (Thomas and Ruben) found the concept of a Cultureboy, a boy who doesn’t like culture, very funny. And given the entrepreneurial nature of Thomas, we decided to make T-shirts about this Cultureboy. But after a few meetings together with the graphic designer it became clear that putting Cultureboy do’s and don’t’s on a T-shirt was not a success from a graphic and humoristic point of view.  We wanted to make T-shirts that people would like to wear more than once. So under impulse of our designer we started creating cleaner prints with a humoristic touch and T-shirts with a twist.

Q. When did Cultureboy start producing?

A. We started in the summer of 2016 and had our website up and running in September 2016.

Q. Who is the team behind The Cultureboy?

A.
* Dora: the designer
* Thomas: the marketer/social media/website
* Ruben: finances

What is the vision of Cultureboy?

We are capable of selling overseas, but the transportation costs all fall down on the customer since we are a small starting company. We already sold T-shirts and sweaters in our neighboring countries and hope to step that up in the near future.

Are you just sold online or at retail stores?

We are selling online and in a couple of smaller hip stores around Belgium. For next year we hope to have our brand in a lot more stores around Belgium. But this is our first year, so not we are happy that stores are already interested.

Q. Do you have a traceability path for your products from start to final product?

A. Yes, we work together with a producer who guarantees Fair wear, organic cotton, … bio-sustainability in general.

Q. You state you are Fairwear – yet are you certified and registered with the Fairwear website?

A. Yes, our T-shirt and sweaters are produced by Stanley&Stella who are certified and registered.

Q. What are the future visions for Cultureboy?

A. In the near future: Get our clothes into more stores. Get extra (social)media attention. Expand in general.  In the far future (the dream ;-)): set up our own Cultureboy stores and perhaps make other products besides clothing…. (watch this space)

Big thanks to Cultureboy for answering the testing questions.  Sincerest wishes for the business and it’s great to see a fun eco-conscious brand from Belgium.  A brand to keep an eye on, who have a story that is not just about their products. Their ethos is just as important!
