Just prior to the old swimming pool in Mechelen, you will see a crafted sign saying ti’le MALINES. On first glance you may wander what it is….
Carry on walking past and you will see an industrial concrete production center. To the right entrance, a handcrafted sign saying Tile Malines. If you judge a place on the sign alone, it may be a bit off putting. So inquisitive Ngaire kicked in and off we (Dean my Partner) went to explore. Since then we are now regular visitors to T’ile Malines.
Don’t stop, keep those feet walking! Continue on the right hand side and you will start to feel you are entering the countryside. Wild flowers are growing up along the Dijle, the bees buzzing and no wifi. Highly recommended not to wear high heels as there is plenty of gravel to navigate along with sand (if you don’t like it getting between your toes).
T’Malines is a cosy outdoor space which is home to a cafe and bar, live music, food festivals, movie nights and other events. Highly suitable for young children and even the older generation. Located on around 3000m² it has two listed buildings – the old Lock Keeper’s house and the Lock Keeper’s studio. Restoration projects are ongoing at the Lock Keeper’s house. The studio has been renovated and hosts various events from street dance hangouts, children’s craft sessions and much more. For the latest events keep abreast via their Facebook page.
Old style gardens are still retained with various fruit trees located closer to the Lock Keeper’s house. There are flushing toilets and an ecological straw barn toilet located at the back of the bar (this one is for the men). Dotted throughout the grounds is a selection of garden furniture. Plenty of varied seating available – handcrafted benches out of recycled timber pallets, traditional garden tables, and chairs or comfy seats located under the marquee tent. A seat for all!
In the later afternoon, fires are lit which are located near the bar and also near the main marquee tent. Outdoor heaters are available for those chillier summer evenings. Recommend: bring a jacket if you feel you may stay longer (which is easily done)!
Children (or Adults) can enjoy spending time in the sandpit or bouncing on the trampoline. If you are wishing for a quieter evening then a selection of games are available from the bar. Or why not sit back and enjoy the odd people watching and catching up with family and friends.
A wide selection of drinks available, teas, beers, wine and cocktails there is plenty to keep your thirst at bay. If you are finding yourself to be hungry then try out a burger from Jeffe’s bar. You can stuff your burger with as much salad selection and sauces. Other dishes are available and prices are variable.
So what kicked started Tile Malines?
